John and Mavis Cup Races - Saturday 5 June
Published 09:01 on 4 Jun 2021
The annual Club programme usually includes a race that is open to all members on the final Saturday of Training Week. If the weather conditions are suitable, there is also a race for the trainees. These races are followed by the end of training barbecue.
Sadly this year training had to be cancelled. However, in compensation we offered the excellent 3-day Rediscover Sailing extravaganza and we are still holding the John and Mavis Cup races with some slight changes. In the absence of trainees, the trainees' race will be open to novices and cadets. We are borrowing the rules from the Novices and Cadets series and hope that those of you who are rusty and/or inexperienced will feel able to take part. Your boat will display the stripey tape; the course will be a simple one and more experienced racers will be asked to give you room.
Low water is at 2:07pm. The members' race will start at 2:30pm. The Novices and Cadets race will start at approximately 2:36pm. Both races will be to the format of a Club Combined race i.e. one fleet (fast and slow not separated) and average lap time scoring. Novice and Cadet boats are to be given a wide berth by Member's Race boats; failure to keep clear will be penalised. The forecast is looking reasonable for Saturday afternoon so do consider coming along and giving it a go!
The John Harmer Trophy will be awarded to the winner of the members' race. The winner of the Novices and Cadets race will be awarded the Mavis Harmer Trophy. The trophies, named in honour of John and Mavis Harmer (see here), will be presented after the racing and there will also be some additional spot prizes.
Sadly, we have had to cancel the end of training barbecue this year. However, the bar will be open with Phase 12 protocols applying (here).
