Club Investigates the Acquisition of Another Gig

Published 11:30 on 26 Oct 2024

What has happened since we got our first gig.

At the EGM held at the club on 31 January 2024, it was agreed by the membership that the Seafarers should invest in a Bursledon Gig. When the meeting finished, a handful of members, who expressed an interest in rowing, gathered round to discuss this new venture for the club.

Fast forward now to 12 October 2024. Looking at the Rowing Outings Logbook, the gig has been taken out over 100 times! This does not even include the competitive events we have taken part in.

From just half a dozen keen rowing monitors, there are now over 40 people who have joined the Whatsapp Rowing Group, several of whom are completely new members to the club.

So why do we need another gig?

There is great friendship and support amongst the local rowing fraternity. Most of them organising challenges that other clubs are invited to take part in. Already this year we as a club have taken part in three major challenges. The Tudor Challenge, The Hamble Valley Regatta and the Cockleshell Challenge, a rowing race that takes you out and around the Horse Sands Fort. However, and this is the important point, only 4 rowers can take part at any one time! I am sure there are many within the group who would be extremely keen to take part in, for example, the 21 mile London River Race in September 2025 just to row under Tower Bridge. Now if we had two gigs.....

How do we get another gig?

The committee have been discussing at their meetings ways in which a second gig for the club could be funded. Kathy Bune has been investigating getting support from Sport England. Sport England make awards to not-for-profit organisations and local communities to encourage adults and children to take up and maintain sporting habits for life. To that end, Kathy can confirm that Sport England will support the purchase of a gig by donating up to £6,000 ...provided we can match it. There are various ways that the other half could be raised. However, Sport England have suggested that they would supply a list of sympathetic businesses that would be interested in investing in the project in return for the club promoting them in one form or another.

Kathy is very enthusiastic about this and is prepared to take it on herself to make it all happen. She deserves your support in initiating this project.

This would be a wonderful opportunity to get another gig without any financial cost to the club.
