Excellent Talk by Tom Barnett on HM Coastguard - Tuesday 17 January 2023

Published 09:30 on 15 Jan 2023

Tom Barnett, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Fareham, joined us in the Clubhouse on 17th January 2023 to give a talk about the work and structure of HM Coastguard. From twisted ankles on coastal paths to coordinating the rescue of a dismasted yacht at 29 Degrees West and everything in between.

Amongst other things Tom leads one of Solent Coastguard's operational teams. He grew up in Lymington sailing both dinghies and keelboats. He now lives in Gosport with his young family and keeps his Gib'sea 92 in the harbour. On his days off, Tom is mostly found pottering around the Solent, with great ambition to one day solo sail round the UK.

Tom gave brilliant talk from last night, explaining just what the Coast Guard is responsible for. Tom's presentation was superb, informative, surprising and often amusing. Thanks Tom and thanks also to Viv for all her hard work arranging the evening.

In appreciation of Tom's time, a collection was held for his chosen charity - Hamble Life Boat. We managed to raise an amazing £130 for the Hamble Lifeboat (£100 donated by those present and £30 from the Club)

Many thanks to everyone who came out on a rather chilly evening.
