Club Charity

CLUB SUPPORT FOR CHARITIES

Background

The Club supports many charities. Our Tuesday talks often end with collections/club contributions; charities such as Hamble Lifeboat, SS Shieldhall, Hampshire Search and Rescue, and MIND have benefited in this way. We invite RNLI representatives to the clubhouse on the evenings of our AGM and our Christmas Draw to sell Christmas cards, calendars, and other gifts. Our Coffee Morning each September raises funds for Macmillan Cancer. Each September we hold a race to raise funds for the Bart's Bash Foundation. Additionally, each year or so we choose a specific charity to support which is used, amongst other things, to give purpose to the Commodore's Challenge.

SSC Supported Charity 2025 - Surfers Against Sewage

In April 2025, the Committee agreed to make Surfers Against Sewage (here) the Club Charity. SAS is a group that campaigns for clean oceans, rivers, and lakes for people and for wildlife. The quality of the water that we operate in has always been relevant. However, with "dipping" becoming more popular with members, and rowing activities taking place both here and on other stretches of water, the relevance of this charity to Seafarers has increased.

Previously Supported Charities

Specific charities supported in the past have included Toe In The Water and SCaRF (Skin Cancer Research Fund).

In 2018 the Club raised more than £221 for Cash for Kids. The official charity of local radio station Wave 105, it provides support to disabled and disadvantaged children across the South Coast.

From 2019 to 2021, the Club raised £730 for Wetwheels (here), a charity conceived by Geoff Holt MBE DL. Geoff visited Seafarers in November 2018 to give an inspiring talk about his life and about WetWheels. The charity builds disabled people's confidence by providing access to the sea in specially modified powerboats.

From 2022 to 2024 the Club Charity was Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (www.hiowaa.org); more than £1,500 was raised for that cause.
