Rowsea Challenge

Background

This Challenge will provide a focus for casual rowing. The course represents an appropriate exercise for developing rowing skills and teamwork and, by timing each attempt, rowers and teams will be able to measure their progress.

The Challenge involves rowing the Club's Bursledon Gig around a fixed triangular course of approximately 3.25 miles. The time taken is measured and recorded. The team with the fastest time will be the current "title holder". The team with the fastest time over the season will be awarded a trophy at the Club's annual Prize Giving.

Instructions

  1. Form a team of up to five one of whom must be a Gig Coordinator.
  2. Prepare and launch the Gig at high water; the course begins and ends at the slipway.
  3. When ready, note the time and row away from the slipway.
  4. Row to the Haven Knox-Johnston race mark; leave it to starboard.**
  5. Row to the Hamble Yacht Services race mark; leave it to starboard.**
  6. Row back to the slipway.**
  7. Note the time when the first crew member steps onto the slipway.
  8. Record the names of the team, and the date, start time, and elapsed time of the row in the Rowsea Challenge log.

** Crew may change positions during the Challenge provided there are never more than four people rowing at any one time.
