Tuesday Talk - SS Shieldhall
Another interesting talk from John Scott ( a former Cruise Ship Captain ) this time talking about the Steamship Shieldhall, based in Southampton. John is is a Trustee and Master on the Steamship Shieldhall.
Some of you may have been on this ship, or seen it sailing around The Solent. It is the largest working steamship in Britain. A member of the National Historic Fleet she serves as a sea going tribute to Britain's maritime heritage. Operated by a team of dedicated volunteers, rightly proud of Shieldhall's No 1 TripAdvisor ranking in Southampton, you too can experience the golden age of steam by booking on an excursion or visiting her in Southampton. The volunteer team were recently presented with The King's Award for Voluntary Service 2024!
So hear all about it, first hand, from John tonight.
John is a New Zealander and trained with a NZ company, Union Steamship Co of NZ, sailing around NZ and Australia. He came to the UK and eventually joined Cunard Line where he sailed on various passenger vessels including 10 years on QE2 - 4 as Chief Officer. He then joined Holland America Line where he was Master for 24 years before retiring in February 2020. He now part-time instructs shiphandling etc. in a simulator at Lakeside.
Friends and family also welcome. The talk is free. Bar open from 19.00 and the talk starts promptly at 19.30. ------- NOTE THE EARLIER START TIME !
