Rediscover Sailing (Day 1)

29th May 2021, 09:30 - 18:30

With the traditional RYA beginners course cancelled, here is an opportunity to enjoy our Club over a Bank Holiday weekend. The plan is to provide a safe and fun environment to allow us all to go sailing and for those who wish to develop their skills. The training team will be on hand to enable a number of sessions or clinics for members to simply turn up and have a go. (no booking required)

Each day will be split into morning and afternoon sessions, with 2 training 'opportunities' in each, plus a cadet/family group in the mornings. In parallel, members will be able to enjoy independent sailing. There will be separate sailing areas for each session and group sizes will be actively managed. Participants will be regularly rotated to ensure everyone gets a chance to enjoy the various sessions and the club's boats will be available.

The bar will be open at lunchtimes and after sailing.

  • Improve sailing is designed to assist relative novices with developing their cores skills and will largely focus on the '5 essentials', which are balance, trim, sails setting, centreboard position and course made good, plus wind awareness. This is likely to involve sailing a triangular course with coaching from the patrol boat.
  • Improve racing will use a series of drills and exercises to help with starting, mark rounding and sailing faster. The instructors will run this from a patrol boat.
  • Asymmetric/spinnakers will self evidently look to help develop ability in downwind sailing. Coaching from a patrol boat will be help.
  • Powerboat refresher will be a chance to refresh skills, including navigating in shallow water and laying marks effectively.
  • Cadet sessions will use the Oppies and be focused on building confidence, having fun and the basic concepts behind sailing. Parental help would be appreciated to help mitigate too much close contact.
  • Independent recreational sailing.
