2025 One-off Sailing Events » Edie Sampson and Bart's Bash Races
Background
Mrs Frances Edith Sampson, known to all as Edie, was a leading light of the Club for almost three decades. She served as Assistant Bosun and Bosun for over 25 years, as Commodore for two terms and as a Trustee of the Club from 1993 until 2011. Edie embodied all those qualities that have made Seafarers a thriving and successful sailing club. The Club was especially proud when, in 2008, Edie received an RYA Community Award. Edie was elected an Honorary Member of Seafarers in 2009. Sadly, after a fall at home followed by a brief spell in hospital, Edie passed away on Monday 12 September 2011. Until 2011 the Club's annual programme included a "Vice Commodore's Challenge". Since 2012 this has been replaced by an event for which a new prize, the Edie Sampson Trophy, is awarded.
Bart's Bash is the flagship annual event of the Andrew Simpson Foundation. The Foundation was inspired by the late Olympic Gold and Silver medalist Andrew 'Bart' Simpson MBE. Its ethos is to facilitate a wider participation in sailing, and to optimise the benefits that the sport can deliver to young people and ultimately to society at large. Importantly, it seeks to be as inclusive as possible by encouraging participation by children and young people from all backgrounds and by catering for a range of physical and educational abilities. The results from races at thousands of venues are merged to make "Bart's Bash" the largest sailing race in the world. It connects sailing communities across the globe in an annual mass participation campaign.
2025 Races
On Saturday 13 September, the Edie Sampson Trophy Race and the Bart's Bash Race will be run back-to-back. The Edie Sampson Race will be a pursuit race. The start times will be taken from the 2025 Pursuit Times table with a 12:00 start and a nominal 60 minute duration. Our Bart's Bash race will start at approximately 13:15 ie shortly after the Edie Sampson Race has ended. The format will be that of a Club Combined race ie one fleet (fast and slow not separated) and average lap time scoring.
Members may enter one or both of the races. Entry to both races is free. However, participants in the Bart's Bash race will be encouraged to make a donation of the order of £2.50 to the Andrew Simpson Foundation.
Ploughman's Lunch
A Ploughman's lunch will be available with two sittings, the first from 13:30 and the second from 15:00. If you would like a lunch, please book via WebCollect (here).
