2024 One-off Sailing Events » Half Ton and Polar Cup Races
The Half Ton Cup race was introduced in 1979 by John Glover (Commodore at the time) to encourage helms aged 50 or more. The Polar Cup was first presented in 1988 by John Glover (who was a manager at Polar Insulation and, at that time, Seafarers' Sailing Officer - what we now call Racing Secretary). This was awarded to the winner of a race for helms under 50 years of age which was sailed on the same day as the Half Ton Cup race.
For several years, the number of participants in the Polar (Under Half Ton) Cup race has been disappointing; over the last six races the average entry has been less than four and, therefore, the probability of winning has been high. Approximately forty adult Club members will be under 50 years of age on 7 September 2024. If you are one of them, why not enter this race?
Both races are average lap format. Depending on the number of entries, the OOD will decide whether there will be one or two starts. If two starts, the OOD will decide which fleet will start first and be assigned class flag Oscar (Fast Fleet flag), and which fleet will start second and be assigned class flag Delta (Slow Fleet flag).
