2022 One-off Races » Under and Over Half Ton Cup Races

9th July 2022, 14:30 - 16:30

2018 Half Ton and Polar Cup Races

The Half Ton Cup race was introduced in 1979 by John Glover (Commodore at the time) to encourage helms aged 50 or more. The Polar Cup was first presented in 1988 by John Glover (who was a manager at Polar Insulation and, at that time, Seafarers' Sailing Officer - what we now call Racing Secretary). This was awarded to the winner of a race for helms under 50 years of age which was sailed on the same day as the Half Ton Cup race.

For several years, the number of participants in the Polar (Under Half Ton) Cup race has been disappointing; over the last five races the average entry has been less than four and, therefore, the probability of winning has been high. Fifty-three adult Club members will be under 50 years of age on 9 July 2022. If you are one of them, why not enter this race?

Both races are average lap with the Under Half Ton Cup race (class flag Delta, Slow Fleet flag) starting 6 minutes after the Half Ton Cup race (class flag Oscar, Fast Fleet flag). For a reminder of what the flags look like, see the OOD Guide ("Race Preparation" - page 37) within the Duty Crew Guides.
