Club Charity

The Club supports many charities. We have raised funds for the RNLI through a fish supper, the sale of Christmas cards, etc and a collection box. Our Coffee Morning each September raises funds for Macmillan Cancer. Each September we hold a race to raise funds for the Bart's Bash Foundation. Additionally, each year or so we choose a specific charity to support which is used, amongst other things, to give purpose to the Commodore's Challenge.

Specific charities supported in the past have included Toe In The Water and SCaRF (Skin Cancer Research Fund).

In 2018 the Club raised more than £221 for Cash for Kids. The official charity of local radio station Wave 105, it provides support to disabled and disadvantaged children across the South Coast.

The Club decided to support Wetwheels from 2019.

Wetwheels - SSC Supported Charity

Wetwheels was conceived by Geoff Holt MBE DL and he remains the driving force behind the charity. Wetwheels builds disabled people's confidence by providing access to the sea in specially modified powerboats.

Geoff Holt came to Seafarers on 20th November 2018 and gave a talk about his life and about WetWheels. After this inspiring talk, the Committee decided to make Wetwheels the Club Charity.

Update - May 2020

The following information was communicated to Club members by email on 17th May 2020:

By the beginning of 2020 the Club had raised £430 for Wetwheels. With the challenges facing so many charities through the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Committee decided to present the donation without delay or ceremony.

A heart felt thank you was received from Geoff Holt. He asked that this be passed on to all at Seafarers and to note that this very kind donation will enable the charity to take 20 people on the water for a Wetwheels adventure as soon as they were permitted to.

Geoff added "These are desperately uncertain times and we know that our disabled users are often the most vulnerable and it will be they who will be shielded longest. We are already hearing reports of disabled people struggling more with the mental health because of the lockdown. Our Commodore wanted to add his thanks to all at the Club for being so generous in their support of this fantastic cause."
