Training

The Club is an RYA Training Centre. Each season we run a number of training courses for Club Members. The Start Sailing and Basic Skills course for beginners plus a more advanced course to enable our more experienced members to extend their skills and qualifications. The Club also trains its own rescue boat helms. The Start Sailing and Basic Skills course consists of a number of theory sessions on midweek evenings during April and May. The practical element of the course takes place during the school mid-term break at the end of May. The Club owns a few dinghies which can be used by members with suitable RYA qualifications.

Training Courses 2008

This year we are planning to run two RYA National Dinghy Certification Scheme courses for Start Sailing and Basic Skills (Level 1 & 2), and either Day Sailing or Seamanship Skills.

The Start Sailing and Basic Skills course will consist of evenings sessions which cover the theory of sailing, tying knots and rigging boats. These sessions will run on Wednesday evenings from 1830 to 2000 starting on the 30th April and continue through to the 30th May (Friday evening) with a final session on the 4th June.

The practical training will take place from 24th May to 1st June (all day at the weekends and bank holiday and evenings only on weekdays), this will also include capsize recovery drill training.

Fees: £40 including Log Book and Certificate (only open to club members)

NB: Trainees must be 11 or over at the time of training (only open to club members).

Seamanship course

The Seamanship Course is intended to develop the skills of those who are already reasonably competent sailors. As a guide, candidates should be of at least RYA "Basic Skills" (Level 2) standard and have one full season's sailing experience completed recently. If in doubt please contact the Training Secretary. This RYA course is designed to develop sailing techniques such as sailing in adverse conditions, towing, heaving to, anchoring, man overboard drills and coming alongside. The course will consist of two theory lessons and four practical sessions.

This course should run at the end of July - dates and times to be confirmed.

Fees: £20 including Certificate (only open to club members).
