Snooker at Seafarers

History

Seafarers Sailing Club has entered a Snooker Team into the Winter Snooker League at the Lee On The Solent Sailing Club ever since it was started in 1993. The Seafarers Team is organised and Captained by Mick Merson.

The League consists of four teams, one provided by each of the following Sailing Clubs :-

A team consists of 8 players who play in pairs. This means that each player plays two frames at each fixture. The fixtures are arranged so that the teams play each other once before Christmas and once after Christmas. All matches are played on Wednesdays, with a 19.30 start.

The Fixtures are rounded off with a Captains evening, when four players from each of the teams play a Knockout tournament.

Lee On the Solent Sailing Club provide two excellent Snooker Tables with a buffet after the first four frames of each fixture. There is a nominal charge to each club every time they play. This covers table lights and the buffet.

The Matches are played in a friendly atmosphere and are enjoyed by all.

The standard of play is variable so anyone can play and have a chance to win.

New players are always welcome – please contact any of those below if you are interested in playing.

Captains Knockout Competition, All Clubs - 22nd February

General comments on Seafarers matches so far

Seafarers performed quite well in the first 2 matches but we knew L o S would put out a strong team against us – and they did. The match was closer than the result shows. We will have another chance later.

Our main problem this year has been getting the required 8 players. In the second match we were one short, which did not give us a penalty, but if we drop to 6 players we have to forfeit a frame.

In the 3rd match we were also one player short but Peter Cox stepped in to help, thanks Peter.

In Match 4 there were two reasons for our loss, we in general did not play well and Fareham have found some quite good new players. We are still hoping to recruit new players – and would welcome anyone who would like to join us ?

In our latest match versus Hill Head things were not looking good as we only had 6 players available until Peter Cox again helped us out. The result was looking like a draw until Tricia and Roger Rudram had a good win. Our 7 players all played well to get the win.

Update 15th February Our last match in the League did not give us the win we wanted. LOSSC caused some chaos by playing a reduced team of their best players. No excuse we did not play well.

In our last match we managed to recruit a new player - Tony Nicholls, he played well and we hope he will be available to play next winter.

This year we did not play to our usual standard but still managed to finish in our usual 2nd place.

Thanks to all those who have supported the Seafarers Snooker team this winter.

On the 22nd February we have the Captains Knockout tournament. This requires two pairs from each club. Our 'A team' is Mick Merson and Tricia Gordon (Most regular player) and the 'B team' is Frank Prosser and Tony Mills (Most successful pair)

Unfortunately Tricia was unable to join us for the Captains Knockout – Roger Rudrum was able to stand in at short notice.

The Tournament itself did not follow the usual format, as Hill Head were unable to field any players. After a combination of 'singles' and 'doubles', Hill Head were awarded the Trophy. Seafarers played well with several very close 'black ball' games.

LOSSC are in the process of reorganising their Club site. The Club could only retain about a quarter of the current site. The result of these changes could have a bad effect on the availability of the Snooker Tables. Some discussion has taken place but time will tell !!!
